Fixed wireless internet explained: WISPs, 5G home, and the line-of-sight reality
Two very different products share one label — and both live or die by what’s actually between your roof and the tower.

Short answer
“Fixed wireless” means internet delivered by radio to a stationary antenna at your home — no wire from the street. Two distinct families wear the label: WISPs (local wireless ISPs with their own towers and a small antenna professionally aimed at them from your roof) and carrier FWA / 5G home internet (a self-installed cellular gateway). Both live and die by radio conditions at your exact address: distance, terrain, and above all line of sight. Done right, fixed wireless is fast, stable, and often the best non-wired option; done over a tree line, it’s a subscription to frustration.
Family 1: WISPs — the local operators
A WISP builds small towers (or leases grain-elevator, water-tower, and ridge sites) and serves homes within radio reach. An installer mounts a compact antenna (CPE) on your roof or eave, aims it at the tower, and runs one cable inside.
What decides your experience:
- Line of sight (LOS). Clear path to the tower = the product works as designed. Partial obstruction (near-LOS) sometimes works on lower frequencies with reduced performance; a full tree line or ridge usually ends the conversation. Remember foliage is seasonal — a February survey can lie about July.
- Spectrum. Some WISPs use licensed spectrum (cleaner, interference-protected), many use unlicensed bands (shared with everything else, more variable). Worth asking.
- The operator’s backhaul and load. Your tower shares its own upstream connection among its users. A well-run WISP upgrades before saturation; an overloaded one shows the classic evening slump.
The questions that identify a good WISP: What are realistic evening speeds, not best-case? Licensed or unlicensed spectrum? What’s the install cost, contract, and obstruction-survey policy? What happens when trees grow — re-aim visits? Local WISPs are often excellent precisely because the support person knows your hill by name — but quality varies operator to operator more than in any other internet category.
Family 2: Carrier FWA — 5G home internet
The national-carrier version: a plug-in gateway that talks to the same cell sites as phones. No roof work, self-install in minutes, easy trials — and performance that depends on cell distance, band, walls, and sector congestion (you may be deprioritized behind phone traffic at peak). WISP vs. carrier FWA in one line: the WISP engineers a dedicated radio link to your roof; the carrier sells you a slice of the local cell. The former is more deterministic when properly installed; the latter is more convenient and easier to try.
What fixed wireless is genuinely good at
- Reaching past the wired edge — the core use case: rural roads and exurban pockets where cable/fiber stop.
- Speed of deployment. A WISP can light a valley in months; fiber takes years.
- Competitive pressure. A good WISP or FWA offer disciplines a lazy wired incumbent’s pricing.
- Latency. Terrestrial radio links are short: latency is far closer to wired than to GEO satellite — though not level with it. NetForecast, measuring December 2022 to May 2023, found a median round trip of 81.4 ms on carrier 5G fixed wireless against 56.8 ms on cable. No WISP was in that panel, and its published results cover latency, packet loss and bandwidth, not jitter.
The honest limitations
- Weather: heavy rain degrades higher-frequency links briefly (rain fade); it’s a modest effect on well-engineered links — much less than satellite folklore suggests — but it exists.
- Trees grow. The number-one long-term failure mode of WISP links. Budget for the possibility of a mast extension or re-aim.
- Shared capacity: both families share sector/tower capacity; the operator’s investment discipline is your evening speed.
- Upload: typically asymmetric; heavy uploaders should chase fiber first.
- Inbound connections: both families commonly put you behind carrier-grade NAT, so port forwarding, a home camera system or a self-hosted server may not be reachable from outside — see what CGNAT breaks and how to test for it.
How to evaluate fixed wireless at your address
- Find the operators. The FCC map lists licensed fixed-wireless filers at your location (unfamiliar names are normal — WISPs rarely advertise); neighbors and local forums fill the gaps the map misses.
- Insist on a site survey (WISP) or run the trial window (FWA) — radio truth is address-specific, and the map’s “available” is a hypothesis.
- Test the worst hour, not the demo. Evening speed tests and a real video call during your trial or the survey period.
- Ask the growth question: what’s the operator’s plan when the sector fills — and for WISPs, what’s the policy when your trees do what trees do.
Frequently asked questions
Is fixed wireless the same as satellite?
No. Fixed wireless is a short terrestrial radio hop to a nearby tower — low latency, local operator. Satellite bounces through space — a different physics budget entirely. The confusion comes from both being “wireless to an antenna at your house.”
Do I need a professional install?
WISP: yes — aiming a directional antenna and verifying line of sight is the product. Carrier FWA: no — it’s a plug-in gateway, though placement inside your home meaningfully changes performance.
Will rain or snow knock out my fixed wireless?
Heavy precipitation can briefly degrade high-frequency links; well-designed links carry margin for it. If an operator’s service fails in every drizzle, that’s an engineering (or oversubscription) problem to raise — not an inherent property of the technology.
Can fixed wireless handle remote work?
A properly installed WISP link or a strong FWA signal handles calls and ordinary remote work well. Judge against the real requirements during a trial — uplink stability during your working hours is the metric that matters.

Limitations & caveats
- No FCC Measuring Broadband America fixed report has ever measured a WISP or a carrier fixed-wireless service. All 13 provider/technology configurations in the latest edition, the Thirteenth, are DSL, cable or fiber, and its idle-latency figures by technology and advertised speed tier — fiber 8 to 14 ms, cable 13 to 22 ms, DSL 20 to 61 ms — are the wired baseline this page compares against (the same report’s per-ISP cut, quoted on our latency guide, gives slightly different bounds for the same data), not a measurement of any fixed-wireless link. The satellite contrast comes from the Eighth report, whose 2017 satellite panel measured 594 to 612 ms. The one fixed-wireless measurement quoted here is not federal: NetForecast Report NFR5148, published September 1, 2023, had 55 participants in 29 states host probes cabled to their ISP gateway from December 2022 through May 2023, and put the fixed-wireless median round trip at 81.4 ms against 56.8 ms for cable. Those are medians by network type rather than per ISP, the cabled probe reads better than a Wi-Fi user would, and the panel was two national carriers — no WISP link is measured anywhere on this page.
- The Verizon figures are one carrier’s published disclosure for its own service, quoted as it read on the last-checked date; carrier terms change without notice. They say nothing about WISPs. T-Mobile’s and AT&T’s equivalent disclosures could not be read on that date, so no claim on this page is attributed to either.
- 47 CFR § 15.5 sets the legal condition on unlicensed operation — no right to a frequency, and interference must be accepted — not how much interference any particular link actually sees. Whether an unlicensed link is degraded at your address is a local radio question that only a site survey answers.
- Fixed-wireless coverage on the FCC map is a provider-submitted propagation model, and the rule lets a provider model your antenna four to seven meters above ground. If your antenna cannot go that high, or the path is obstructed, the model’s answer does not describe your site.
- ITU-R P.530 is a link-design method. It puts the rain-fade threshold at roughly 5 GHz and upward, which is why the effect is described here as frequency-dependent and engineerable — it is not a prediction about your service on any given day.
- RFC 6598 reserves address space for carrier-grade NAT but does not require any provider to use it. Whether your line sits behind CGNAT is a per-provider, per-market fact that only your operator can confirm.
- Operator practices — install cost, contracts, obstruction-survey policy, re-aim visits, backhaul upgrades and build timelines — are not sourced here. They vary more between fixed-wireless operators than in any wired category, and are questions to put to the specific operator.
- Nothing here ranks operators or promises that any service is available, orderable or good at your address.
