I switched carriers and my signal got worse: band mismatch explained

Short answer

Carriers transmit on different frequency bands, and the low bands (roughly 600–900 MHz) are what penetrate buildings and travel far; the fast mid and high bands fade quickly and stop at walls. Each carrier holds different low-band licenses in each market — so switching networks changes which frequencies reach your rooms, and a spot your old carrier covered with low band may only get your new carrier’s mid band, or nothing. A second cause: your phone may not support every band the new network relies on, especially if it was bought for the old network. Both are called band mismatch, and both are fixable — by settings, device, Wi-Fi calling, or (honestly) switching back.

Indoors, low band is what you actually live on. Which carrier has strong low band at your address is a local accident of spectrum auctions and tower placement — it varies market by market, which is why nationwide reputation tells you little about your kitchen.

Diagnosing which mismatch you have

  1. Compare outdoors vs indoors. Step outside where it’s weak. Signal fine on the porch but poor inside → classic spectrum mismatch (the new carrier’s indoor-penetrating layer is weaker there). Weak outside too → the network is simply thinner in your area.
  2. Check the device side. If your phone came from the old carrier or was imported, look up its model’s supported bands against the new network’s requirements (the carrier’s BYOD checker does this) — a missing workhorse band produces exactly this symptom. Install any pending carrier-settings update either way.
  3. Test like you live there. The honest method from our switching guide — a trial eSIM or a borrowed phone on the target network, measured in your actual rooms — is as valid after switching as before: run it for the network you left or the one you’re considering next.

What actually helps, in cost order

  • Free: Wi-Fi calling at the problem location; carrier-settings update; restart after the update.
  • Cheap: if the device lacks bands, a phone with full support for the new network transforms the experience — check before buying anything else.
  • Real money: a certified signal booster helps only when outdoor signal is usable — the indoor fix ladder covers when it will and won’t.
  • The honest exit: switch to the network that’s actually strongest at your address — that’s not a defeat, it’s the point of testing.

Frequently asked questions

The coverage map showed full coverage at my address. Was it wrong?

Probably not wrong — modeled. Carrier maps predict outdoor signal from tower data and physics models; they don’t know about your walls, your floor, or which band your phone actually connects to indoors. Two carriers can both honestly show “covered” while delivering very different indoor experiences at the same address.

Can a setting fix band mismatch?

Occasionally. A carrier-settings update ensures the phone knows the network’s current band plan, and on some Android phones you can check which band you’re on with field-test or service menus. But if the carrier’s nearest low-band signal simply doesn’t reach your kitchen, no setting invents it — the honest fixes are Wi-Fi calling, a different device, or a different network.

My unlocked phone worked great on my old network. Why not on the new one?

“Unlocked” means it will accept the SIM; it doesn’t mean the radio supports every band the new network uses — especially phones bought from another carrier or imported. If the phone lacks the new network’s workhorse low band, it will show fewer bars indoors than a phone with full band support, on the same network at the same spot.

Is this a reason to return my new plan or phone?

It’s the reason return windows exist. If daily-life locations — home, work, commute — are materially worse and Wi-Fi calling doesn’t cover the gap, going back (or to a third network) is a legitimate outcome. Test honestly within the window rather than hoping it improves; coverage at a fixed address rarely changes month to month.
